Wellness Industry’s Shortcomings

Being interested in self-development, health and wellbeing, I’ve thought about wellness trends and why don’t they entirely serve us. The more practices we tick the healthier we should be, right? Have a look at this list:

„Wellness trends 2020’s”

·         veganism, organic food, special diets;

·         working out, fitness, yoga

·         air purifiers

·         breathing practices, meditation, mindfulness

·         drinking water

·         CBD, supplements, plant medicine

·         Immunity-boosting products

·         Wellness apps (meditation, screen control, step tracking)

·         spa, massage, beauty

·         spiritual practises (crystals, aroma baths, essential oils, reiki, sound healing, chakra cleansing)

·         podcasts, self-help books, wellness vloggers, social media influencers

·         etc etc

So here we are, collectively. Wellness industry is growing massively: the $4.5 trillion wellness economy has expanded all around us. I’ve surely given my money to this. Since 2017 the growth of the industry has been twice as fast as the growth of the global economy! New sectors continue to emerge thanks to massive consumer needs, based on up-to-date business innovations, new scientific discoveries, technological changes.

The more answers we are looking for the more stuck we get in our unsolved problems. People are yearning for help and solutions, turning to anything that the industry offers. Willing to pay for anything that sounds promising.

Something in the whole concept of wellness doesn’t sound right. The face of it is too shiny, too much money is involved, too much happiness promised, too wide smiles on the book covers. I’m sure there are individuals in the business who naturally want to help and some of them truly care about your health. However, how expensive air purifiers do we actually need? At the same time it’s beautiful to see how far we’ve come (though this is nothing new..).

It’s how we’ve tried to figure it out since the beginning of times. How do human beings function best, what is our full potential – these are some of the questions driving us. Human development with it’s creative expression has a desire to grow, desire for up..

It’s not a secret that the shortcomings are around distraction. We love to be distracted, we’re addicted to distraction. That’s how they’ve got the hook on us and they know well it’s working. But how to lessen the distractions, stop the vicious circle, have real choice? Building up inner qualities of feeling safe (and needing less comfort from crystals) is a real difficult journey. Much less distracted one, much more relying on you to take the responsibility for your wellbeing.

Since there is no single right way for everyone, I will just come up with one for someone. If this doesn't talk to you, there's plenty of other approaches, posture trainings, fitness programs, meditation techniques.. a lot to digest! Hopefully you do find something that has value to you and the world around you.
